Inevitably, the nation-state’s ability to transcend particular societies and form a larger arena of collective identity does risk the ruin of homogenisation; of pure simultaneity that would eradicate heterogeneous experiences of the present, and hence alternative political stances. Equally, however, it is precisely the appeal to the nation that might allow a collectivity to form that would be potentially large enough to resist – in the name of identity – such transnational forms of global capitalism.
